Email and website stopped after DNS changes
Symptoms
- The website and email both stopped after a DNS change.
- Only one service works, for example the site works but mail does not, or the reverse.
- The problem started right after changing records, nameservers or the hosting address.
Common causes
- A DNS record was removed or replaced, including the MX, A or TXT records that other services need.
- The records were added at a different DNS provider from the one that serves the domain.
- A record was typed with a wrong value, such as an old address or a missing mail host.
- The change has not finished spreading, and different visitors see different results.
Safe initial checks
- Record your current DNS. Save the output of
dig A,dig MX,dig TXTanddig NSfor the domain before you make any further change. - Compare with the last working set. If you have an earlier export or note, use it.
- Confirm the nameservers with
dig NS yourdomain.com +short.
Save these results before you edit anything, so you can compare after each change.
Step-by-step solutions
- Website record missing. Restore the A record to the hosting address. See A and AAAA records.
- Mail records missing. Restore the MX records for your mail service. See MX records and Add MX records.
- Mail authentication records missing. Restore the SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for your mail service. See Email authentication records.
- Wrong provider. Make changes only at the DNS provider the nameserver lookup names. See Find your DNS provider.
Change one record at a time, and test after each change.
How to confirm the issue is fixed
- The website opens, and
dig Areturns the hosting address. - Test mail is sent and received, and
dig MXreturns the mail hosts.
When to contact support
