Incorrect MX records
Symptoms
- Mail to your domain bounces, or never arrives.
- The mail server settings in your client point to one server, but DNS points to another.
- The MX records were changed recently, and some mail arrives while other mail does not.
Common causes
- The MX records are missing, or point to a host that does not exist.
- The priority values are wrong, so a backup server is used first.
- An old MX record was left in place when the mail service changed.
- MX records were added to a DNS provider that does not serve the domain.
Safe initial checks
- Look up the MX records:
dig MX yourdomain.com +short. - Check the nameservers:
dig NS yourdomain.com +short, to confirm which provider holds the records. - Compare the result with Add MX records or the mail settings in your account.
Step-by-step solutions
- Missing records. Add the MX records listed for your mail service, with the priorities shown.
- Wrong host or priority. Correct the host names and priority values, and remove any old entries.
- Wrong DNS provider. Edit the records at the provider the nameserver lookup names. See Find your DNS provider.
- Wait for the change to spread. Allow time for the TTL of the old records to pass before you test again.
How to confirm the issue is fixed
dig MX yourdomain.com +shortreturns only the expected hosts, in the expected order.- A test message from an outside address arrives.
When to contact support
Contact support if the records match your service settings, and mail still fails after the TTL has passed.
