Website works without www but not with www

Symptoms

  • https://example.com opens, but https://www.example.com shows an error or another page.
  • Or the opposite: www works and the root domain does not.
  • The browser says the name cannot be found, or it shows a certificate warning for www.

Common causes

  • There is no DNS record for www, or the www record points to the wrong place.
  • An old A record for www is still there next to the new CNAME.
  • The free SSL certificate covers the root domain but not www.
  • The domain in the hosting account does not include www.

Safe initial checks

  1. Run dig CNAME www.example.com +short. The answer should show web.apncloud.net..
  2. Run dig A example.com +short. The answer should show an IP address.
  3. Open both names in a private window and note the exact error.

Do not delete MX or TXT records while you check.

Step-by-step solutions

  1. No www record. Add a CNAME record named www with the target web.apncloud.net. See Point your domain to hosting with web.apncloud.net.
  2. Old record next to the CNAME. Delete the old A, AAAA or CNAME record for www, so only one record is left.
  3. Certificate warning on www. Request the free SSL certificate again in the hosting panel and make sure it covers the domain and www. See SSL certificate not issued with Cloudflare.
  4. Root domain does not work. Check the root record. Use CNAME flattening at Cloudflare, ALIAS or ANAME, or an A record, as shown in the guide linked in step 1.
  5. Choose one main name. Pick www or the root domain as your main address and redirect the other one to it. Do this in one place only.

How to confirm the issue is fixed

  • Both https://example.com and https://www.example.com open the website, or one of them redirects to the other.
  • The dig commands above show the expected answers.
