Cloudflare redirect loop
Symptoms
- The browser shows "too many redirects" or
ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS. - The page never loads and the address bar keeps changing between
http://andhttps://. - The problem started after you added the domain to Cloudflare or changed an SSL/TLS or redirect setting.
Common causes
- Cloudflare SSL/TLS mode is Flexible. Cloudflare connects to our servers over HTTP, our servers redirect to HTTPS, and the request loops.
- HTTPS redirects in more than one place, such as Cloudflare, a WordPress plugin and the
.htaccessfile. - The website address in WordPress or Laravel uses
http://or a different name than the one visitors use. - A redirect rule in Cloudflare that sends
wwwto the root domain, while another rule sends it back.
Safe initial checks
- Open the site in a private window to avoid saved redirects.
- Run
curl -IL https://example.comand look at theLocationlines. If the same address repeats, you have a loop. - In Cloudflare open SSL/TLS, then Overview, and note the current mode.
Write down every setting before you change it.
Step-by-step solutions
- Flexible mode. Change the mode to Full. Use Full (strict) only when the hosting panel shows an issued certificate for the domain and for
www. See Cloudflare settings for APNCloud hosting. - Several HTTPS redirects. Keep one. Turn off the others in the plugin, in
.htaccessor in Cloudflare. - Wrong website address. Set the address of the application to the exact HTTPS name that visitors use. For WordPress see WordPress behind Cloudflare. For Laravel see Laravel behind Cloudflare.
- Conflicting redirect rules. In Cloudflare open the redirect rules and remove the rule that sends traffic back to the previous address.
- Still looping. In Cloudflare use Purge Cache, then clear your browser data and test again.
How to confirm the issue is fixed
curl -IL https://example.comends with status200and shows no repeated address.- The site opens in a private window over HTTPS.
