Emails going to spam
Symptoms
- Recipients find your messages in the spam or junk folder.
- Some recipients never see messages from your domain.
- Email providers show a warning that the sender could not be verified.
Common causes
- SPF, DKIM or DMARC records are missing or wrong. See Email authentication records.
- The sending server is not authorized for the domain.
- Messages contain content or links that look like spam, or send large batches without warning.
- The recipient's provider has low trust in the sender.
Safe initial checks
- Check the SPF record:
dig TXT yourdomain.com +short. - Check the DMARC record:
dig TXT _dmarc.yourdomain.com +short. - Send a test message to a mailbox you own, and open the message headers to see the authentication results.
Step-by-step solutions
- SPF missing or wrong. Publish one SPF record that lists the authorized sending service. See Configure SPF.
- DKIM not set up. Add the DKIM record shown in your email settings. See Configure DKIM.
- DMARC missing. Add a DMARC policy, and start with a monitoring policy. See Configure DMARC.
- Content. Remove unnecessary links and attachments, and send to recipients who asked for your mail.
How to confirm the issue is fixed
- The message headers show passing SPF, DKIM and DMARC results.
- Test messages reach the inbox for at least two providers.
When to contact support
Contact support if the records are correct, the headers show failures, and the problem continues after a few days.
Information to include in a support ticket
- The domain name, and the message header results.
- The sending address and the recipient provider.
