TXT records

This guide explains how to add a TXT record for ownership verification, how to keep your SPF record to one entry, and how to copy long TXT values without breaking them.

Before you begin

  • The DNS case for your domain. Read Find your DNS provider.
  • The exact TXT value from the service that asked for it. Do not type it from memory.
  • The list of TXT records already on the domain, from dig TXT yourdomain.com +short.

Steps

  1. Open the DNS editor at your DNS provider.

  2. Add a verification record. Use the host and value the service gave you. A verification record usually looks like this, with a placeholder value:

    TypeHostValueTTL
    TXT@verification-code-from-the-service3600
  3. Do not create a second SPF record. A domain should have one record that starts with v=spf1. If one exists, edit it instead. See Email authentication records.

  4. Copy long values exactly. Some panels add quotes automatically. Paste the value as the panel expects, without changing a character.

  5. Save the change and wait for it to spread.

  6. Check the result with dig TXT yourdomain.com +short.

Expected result

The TXT value appears in the lookup, and the service confirms the verification.

If something goes wrong

  • Verification keeps failing. Check that the value is complete. A missing character is the most common cause.
  • You now have two SPF records. Combine them into one. Two v=spf1 records make email authentication fail.
  • Removing a verification record broke a service. Restore the record. Some services check the record again later.
