SRV records

This guide explains what an SRV record does, how its name is built, and when you need one.

An SRV record tells a client which host and port provide a particular service for a domain. The name follows the pattern _service._protocol.domain. Its fields are priority, weight, port and target.

Example, using a reserved documentation name:

text
_sip._tcp.example.com. SRV 10 5 5060 sip.example.net.

SRV records are used by some applications, such as voice and chat services. Most websites and standard email do not need them. Add an SRV record only when the software vendor asks for it, and copy every value exactly.
