Change nameservers
This guide explains how to change a domain's nameservers, and how to do it without interrupting your website or email.
Before you begin
- Confirm you are in Case A (the domain's nameservers are managed through the Client Area). Read Find your DNS provider first.
- Confirm the nameserver option appears for your domain in the Client Area. If it does not, ask support. Do not guess nameserver names.
- Know every DNS record the domain uses, such as the website record, the MX records for email and any TXT records.
- Write down the current nameservers, from
dig NS yourdomain.com +short.
Changing nameservers moves all DNS
When nameservers change, every DNS record is read from the new provider. If the new provider does not already contain the same records, your website and email can stop. Create the records first, then change the nameservers.
Steps
- Prepare the records. At the new DNS provider, create every record the domain needs. Include the website records, MX records, SPF, DKIM and any verification TXT records.
- Plan caching and DNSSEC. Lower record TTLs sufficiently before the move where possible, but this does not control parent delegation caches. If DNSSEC is active, coordinate the registrar’s DS record with the new provider; a stale DS record can make the whole domain fail validation.
- Copy the new nameservers exactly from the account page where they are shown. Do not retype them.
- Enter the nameservers in the Client Area and save the change.
- Allow cached answers to expire. Check the authoritative delegation and DNSSEC state first, then compare resolver results after their cached TTLs. There is no universal completion time.
- Check the result. Run
dig NS yourdomain.com +shortand confirm the new nameservers appear. Then check the website and send a test email.
Expected result
The nameservers show the new values, and your website and email keep working.
If something goes wrong
- The website or email stops after the change. Check that the records exist at the new provider. If they do not, restore the old nameservers while you fix the records.
- The old nameservers still show. The change may still be spreading. Wait and check again.
- The option is missing. Do not change nameservers another way. Contact support.
