Transfer a domain
This guide explains how to move a domain that is registered with another company to your APNCloud account, and what to check before you start.
Before you begin
- Access to the current registrar account where the domain is registered.
- The domain must be eligible for transfer. Some domains cannot be moved for a period after registration or after a recent change of contact details. Your current registrar can explain the rule.
- Enough time before the domain expires. Renew it first if the expiry date is close.
- Confirm that the Client Area offers transfers for your domain extension.
Keep your DNS working during the transfer
A transfer does not need your DNS changed. Do not change nameservers or DNS records while the transfer is in progress unless you have a plan for it. Interrupting DNS can take your website or email offline.
Steps
- At your current registrar, make sure the domain is unlocked for transfer.
- Ask your current registrar for the transfer authorization code, if it provides one. Keep the code private.
- Sign in to the Client Area and start a domain transfer for the domain.
- Enter the domain name and the authorization code when the form asks for them.
- Complete the order and payment shown.
- If your current registrar sends a confirmation email, follow its instructions.
- Wait for the transfer to finish. Transfers can take several days, depending on the extension and the current registrar.
- Check your services list. The domain should show as active in the Client Area.
Expected result
The domain appears in your Client Area, and the renewal date is shown there.
If something goes wrong
- The transfer is rejected. Check that the domain is unlocked, the code is correct and the domain is eligible.
- You cannot get an authorization code. Ask your current registrar. This depends on that registrar's policy.
- The website or email stops during the transfer. Check your DNS settings first. Read Find your DNS provider and DNS troubleshooting.
- The domain is about to expire. Renew it at your current registrar or in the Client Area before the transfer continues. See Renew a domain.
