A and AAAA records

This guide explains how to add or change an A record and an AAAA record, so that a domain points to the correct server address.

Before you begin

  • Confirm which DNS case applies to your domain. Read Find your DNS provider.
  • The IP address for your service, copied from your hosting account or VPS details. The examples below use reserved documentation addresses, not real ones.
  • Note the current records for the same host, so you can restore them.

Steps

  1. Open the DNS editor at the provider you identified.

  2. Add an A record for the domain itself. Example, using a documentation address:

    TypeHostValueTTL
    A@192.0.2.103600
  3. Add an A record for www, if you want www.yourdomain.com to work. Use the same value, or create a CNAME record instead. See CNAME records.

  4. Add an AAAA record only if your server has an IPv6 address. Example, using the documentation prefix:

    TypeHostValueTTL
    AAAA@2001:db8::103600
  5. Save the changes and wait for them to spread.

  6. Check the result with dig A yourdomain.com +short and dig AAAA yourdomain.com +short.

Expected result

The lookup returns the address you entered, and the website opens.

If something goes wrong

  • The lookup shows an old address. The change may still be spreading. Check the TTL and wait.
  • The website shows the wrong site. Check whether there is a second A record with a different value. Remove duplicates that you do not need.
  • An AAAA record breaks the site for some visitors. Remove the AAAA record unless the IPv6 address is working and reachable.
