How to add MX records
This guide covers which MX records Business Email needs, how to add them at your DNS provider, and how to check that they are live.
Before you begin
- The DNS provider for your domain. Read Find your DNS provider.
- A copy of your current MX records, so you can restore them if needed.
- A plan for the timing, if the domain already receives mail somewhere else.
Steps
- Sign in to the DNS control panel of your provider. This is where your domain's DNS is managed.
- Open the DNS records for your domain.
- Add the Business Email MX records shown in the table below.
- Save the changes.
- Wait for the changes to spread, then check them as shown below.
Business Email MX records
| Type | Host | Value | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| MX | @ | mx.apncloud.com | 10 |
| MX | @ | mx-relay.apncloud.com | 20 |
The lower priority number is tried first. The second record is a backup.
What @ means
In many DNS control panels, @ means the root domain itself, such as yourdomain.com. If your panel asks for the full name, enter yourdomain.com.
Check existing MX records first
If the domain already has MX records for another mail service, those records decide where incoming mail goes today. Removing or replacing them moves incoming mail to Business Email. Do this only when you are ready, and keep the old service running until you have confirmed that mail arrives correctly.
Check the records
Run this command from a terminal after the changes have spread:
dig MX yourdomain.com +shortThe result should include:
10 mx.apncloud.com.
20 mx-relay.apncloud.com.Cached DNS answers can remain until the old TTL expires. Check the authoritative MX answer first, then compare recursive resolvers. If the authoritative answer is wrong, correct the record or delegation instead of waiting for a fixed period.
Expected result
The dig command returns both Business Email MX records with the correct priorities.
If something goes wrong
- The old mail service still appears. Check whether you removed its MX records, and wait for the TTL to pass.
- The record will not save. Check that the host is
@or the root domain, and that the value has no extra spaces. - Mail does not arrive after the change. Read Email not receiving.
