How to configure Thunderbird
This guide explains how to add your Business Email mailbox to Mozilla Thunderbird with manual settings, and how to keep encryption turned on.
Before you begin
- A Business Email mailbox and its password. See How to create an email account.
- The mailbox username shown in the Business Email Panel.
- The settings below. For what IMAP and SMTP do, see IMAP and SMTP settings.
Settings you need
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Incoming mail (IMAP) | Server mail.apncloud.com, port 993, SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing mail (SMTP) | Server mail.apncloud.com, port 465 with SSL/TLS, or port 587 with STARTTLS |
| Username | The mailbox username shown in the Business Email Panel |
| Password | The password you set for the mailbox |
Steps
- Open Thunderbird and choose Account settings from the menu.
- Choose Account actions, then Add mail account.
- Enter your name, full email address and password.
- Choose Configure manually (or Manual config) if Thunderbird tries to find settings automatically.
- Set the incoming server to IMAP: server
mail.apncloud.com, port993, and connection security SSL/TLS. - Set the outgoing server to
mail.apncloud.com, port465with SSL/TLS, or port587with STARTTLS. - Enter the username from the panel, then select Done.
- Send a test message to another address you control.
Keep encryption on
Do not set connection security to None, and do not accept an unknown certificate for mail.apncloud.com. If Thunderbird shows a certificate warning, check the server name first.
Two notes on IMAP and SMTP
- IMAP keeps mail on the server, so the same mail appears on your phone and computer.
- SMTP sends the mail you write. Thunderbird uses it only for outgoing messages.
Expected result
Thunderbird shows your Business Email folders, and the test message arrives.
If something goes wrong
- Sign-in fails. Read Email authentication errors.
- Sending fails. Read Email not sending.
- A certificate warning appears. Read the warning carefully and check the server name before you go on.
