Domains and subdomains

This guide covers the difference between an additional domain, a subdomain, a domain pointer and a redirect, and how to add or remove each one.

Before you begin

  • A signed-in Hosting and Reseller Panel.
  • The domain or subdomain name you want to use.
  • Confirmation that the DNS for the domain points to your hosting. See Connect a domain to hosting.

These four are not interchangeable

  • An additional domain has its own folder and website.
  • A subdomain such as shop.example.com has its own folder under your account.
  • A domain pointer makes one domain show the same site as another domain.
  • A redirect sends visitors from one address to another address.

Choose the one that matches what you want. A pointer shows the same content, while a redirect changes the address that visitors see.

Steps

Add an additional domain

  1. Open the domain setup section and choose to add a domain.
  2. Enter the domain name and confirm the folder it will use.
  3. Save and check that the new folder appears in the file manager.

Create a subdomain

  1. Open the subdomain section and choose to create one.
  2. Enter the name part only, such as shop, and select the parent domain.
  3. Save. Then add the DNS record for the subdomain, if it does not already exist, at the DNS provider for the domain.

Create a domain pointer or redirect

  1. Open the domain pointer or redirect section.
  2. Enter the source domain and the destination.
  3. Save and test the address in a browser.

Remove a subdomain or domain

  1. Check dependencies and make a verified backup before removing the domain or subdomain. Read which files, databases and mail data the confirmation says will be removed.
  2. Open the list, select only the intended domain or subdomain and review the removal details.
  3. Confirm only after the backup and dependencies are checked. Removing a domain can delete associated website data; recovery is not guaranteed.

Expected result

The domain or subdomain opens in a browser and shows the content you expect.
