Resource usage and logs
This guide explains how to check disk space, bandwidth and inode use, read the website access and error logs, and find out whether a resource limit is causing a problem.
Before you begin
- A signed-in Hosting and Reseller Panel.
- The domain or folder you want to check.
- A rough idea of the problem, such as a slow site, an error page or a failed upload.
Steps
Check resource use
- Open the resource usage section in the panel.
- Look at disk space, bandwidth and, where shown, inode use. Inodes count files and folders, so a site with many small files can reach the inode limit before the disk is full.
- Compare the numbers with the limits in your plan. Limits are set by your plan, not by this guide.
Read the error log
- Open the error log for the domain.
- Find the time of the problem and read the lines around it.
- Note the exact error text. It tells you what to look for in your files or database.
Read the access log
- Open the access log for the domain.
- Look for a spike in visits, or repeated requests to one page. Such a pattern can explain high bandwidth use.
- Do not share visitor details publicly.
Check the site statistics
If your panel offers site statistics, use them to see popular pages and the times of highest traffic.
Expected result
You know how much space, bandwidth and inodes are in use, and you have the log lines that explain a problem.
If something goes wrong
- The disk is almost full. Remove old backups, large logs or unused files. Keep a backup before you delete.
- Bandwidth is used up. Check the access log for unusual traffic. If the cause is normal traffic, ask support about your plan.
- The logs are empty. Reproduce the problem, then check again. Logs may not record anything until a request arrives.
