Databases

This guide explains how to create a MySQL or MariaDB database and a database user, grant the right privileges, import and export data with phpMyAdmin, and connect an application safely.

Before you begin

  • A signed-in Hosting and Reseller Panel.
  • Confirmation that your plan includes databases. Check the plan details.
  • A safe place to record the database name, user name and password. Do not store them in public files.

phpMyAdmin manages MySQL and MariaDB

phpMyAdmin is a web tool for MySQL and MariaDB databases on your hosting account. It does not manage MongoDB or other database types. For another database service, use that service's own tools.

Steps

Create a database and a user

  1. Open the database section in the panel.
  2. Choose the option to create a new database. Enter a short name, such as site_db.
  3. Create a database user with a strong, unique password.
  4. Grant the user access to the database. Choose the privileges the application needs. For a normal website, all privileges on that one database are usually enough.
  5. Save the details securely.

Import and export with phpMyAdmin

  1. Open phpMyAdmin from the panel and sign in with the database user, or with the access the panel provides.
  2. Select your database.
  3. To import, choose Import, select your .sql file and start. To export, choose Export and save the file.
  4. Check the table count after an import, to confirm it worked.

Connect an application

  1. Enter the database name, user and password in the application's settings.
  2. Use localhost as the database host, unless the application documentation or your account details say something different.

Expected result

The application connects to the database, and phpMyAdmin shows your tables after an import.

If something goes wrong

  • Connection failed. Check the database name, user, password and host. Read Database connection failed.
  • Import stops with an error. Check the file size against your upload limit. Very large files may need to be split.
  • The user cannot see the database. Check the privileges granted to that user.
