PHP and applications
This guide explains how to choose a PHP version, change common PHP settings, install an application such as WordPress where the panel offers it, and understand which features depend on your plan.
Before you begin
- A signed-in Hosting and Reseller Panel.
- The PHP version your application needs. Check the application's documentation first.
- A backup of your site before you change the PHP version. See Website backups.
Not every plan supports every feature
Application installers, extra PHP modules, custom server templates and persistent application processes depend on your plan and on what the hosting environment supports. Confirm a feature in your panel before you rely on it.
Steps
Choose a PHP version
- Open the PHP selector in the panel.
- Choose the version for your domain. Select a version your application supports.
- Save and open your site to check it works. If it breaks, switch back to the previous version.
Change common PHP settings
- Open the PHP settings section for the domain.
- Change the setting you need, such as the upload size or the memory limit, within the limits your plan allows.
- Save and test an upload or the page that needs the change.
Install WordPress or another application
- Open the application installer if enabled; check the selected application’s requirements and the destination directory.
- Choose the application, the domain and the folder, then complete the form.
- Save the admin details in a secure place. Never share them.
Laravel and other frameworks
Frameworks often need the web root to point at a public folder inside the application. Check the framework's guide and the domain's document root setting before you upload.
Other features
- PHP extensions can be enabled where the panel lists them.
- Cron jobs are covered in Cron jobs.
- Redis or Node.js may be offered on some plans only. Check your plan before you set them up.
Server templates and application runtimes are different. A legacy application-server icon does not guarantee maintained runtime support. See advanced web-server options before adopting it. For framework-specific deployment and tuning use Application hosting and Optimization.
Expected result
Your site runs on the PHP version you chose, and the application loads without errors.
If something goes wrong
- The site breaks after a PHP change. Switch back to the previous version and check the application's PHP requirements.
- Upload limits are too small. Read the settings above, and check the plan limits.
- The site shows a 500 error. Read WordPress white screen or 500 error.
- The PHP version you need is missing. Ask support whether it can be offered on your plan.
