Website backups
This guide explains how to create a backup of your website, check that it exists, and restore files from it. You will also learn not to assume a backup exists until you have confirmed it.
Before you begin
- A signed-in Hosting and Reseller Panel.
- Confirmation from your plan that backups are offered. If the backup option is not shown, backups may not be included in your plan.
- Enough storage space for the backup. Check the resource usage first.
Steps
Create a backup
- Open the backup section in the panel.
- Choose the option to create a backup. Select the parts you need, such as website files, databases or email, if the panel offers the choice.
- Start the backup and wait until it is complete.
Check the backup
- Open the backup list.
- Confirm that the new backup appears, with the date and time you expect.
- Download a copy to your own computer if you need an off-site copy. Keep the copy private.
Restore files
- Choose the backup and the parts to restore.
- Restore to a test folder first if you can, then check the site.
- Restore to the live folder only after you have checked the backup.
Expected result
A new backup appears in the list. When you restore a test copy, the files open as expected.
If something goes wrong
- The backup option is missing. Check your plan details. Ask support before you rely on backups.
- The backup fails. Check the free storage space and try again.
- The restore does not work. Do not overwrite the live site again. Contact support with the backup date and the error message.
