Domains, DNS and IP addresses

This guide explains how to assign domains to customers correctly, what the reseller DNS and nameserver settings control, and the difference between shared and dedicated IP addresses.

Before you begin

  • A signed-in reseller account, and a hosting user to assign the domain to.
  • The domain's DNS case. Read Find your DNS provider.
  • The IP addresses your plan allows you to assign, shown in the panel.

Changing nameservers moves all DNS

Changing a nameserver setting changes where DNS for a domain is served. A wrong change can take a customer's website and email offline. Check with the customer and read Change nameservers before you change anything.

Steps

Assign a domain correctly

  1. Confirm that the domain belongs to the customer, and that its DNS points to your hosting, if it uses your hosting.
  2. Open the hosting user and add the domain under the correct account.
  3. Check that the domain's folder is the one you intended, and that no other customer uses it.

Use reseller DNS settings

  1. Open the DNS administration section for the reseller account, if your plan offers it.
  2. Review the reseller nameserver settings. Change them only after you have checked the consequences for every domain that depends on them.
  3. Create private nameservers only where your plan supports them, and register the glue records the registry requires.

Shared and dedicated IP addresses

  • A shared IP is used by several customers. Most hosting accounts use shared IPs.
  • A dedicated IP is reserved for one account. Assign it only where your plan allows and the customer needs it.
  • Check the IP addresses shown in the panel before you assign them.

Expected result

The domain opens for the correct customer, DNS answers for it as intended, and each account uses an IP address that your plan permits.

If something goes wrong

  • A domain shows another customer's site. Check that the domain is assigned to the right account, and that no pointer or old setting sends it elsewhere. Read Domain connected but not visible.
  • Nameserver changes stopped email or the website. Restore the previous nameservers, then fix the records at the new provider. Read Nameserver changes not working.
  • You do not see a DNS or IP option. Your plan may not include it. Ask support.
