Forwarders and autoresponders

This guide explains how to forward mail from one address to another, how to set an autoresponder for a vacation message, and how to avoid forwarding loops.

Before you begin

  • A hosting email account or domain address, set up as described in Create and manage mailboxes.
  • The destination address that should receive forwarded mail.
  • The text of any automatic reply you want to send.

Steps

Create an email forwarder

  1. Open the Email Accounts section in the panel and find the forwarder option for your domain.
  2. Enter the address to forward from, such as info@yourdomain.com.
  3. Enter the destination address.
  4. Save, then send a test message to the first address and check that it arrives at the destination.

Set up an autoresponder

  1. Open the autoresponder option in the Email Accounts section.
  2. Choose the mailbox or address that should send the reply.
  3. Enter the subject and the message text. For a vacation message, include the dates and an alternative contact.
  4. Save, then send a test message from another address to check the reply.
  5. Turn the autoresponder off when it is no longer needed.

Catch-all and vacation messages

Some plans offer a catch-all address, which receives mail sent to any name on the domain that does not exist. Use it carefully, because it can attract spam. Check whether your plan offers this option before you rely on it.

Avoid forwarding loops

Do not forward an address to itself, or to a forwarder that sends mail back to the first address. A loop can stop mail delivery and can fill your mailboxes.

Expected result

A test message to the forwarding address arrives at the destination, and the autoresponder sends its reply.

If something goes wrong

  • Forwarded mail never arrives. Check the destination spelling and the spam folder of the destination. Check that the destination is not full.
  • Replies are sent to everyone repeatedly. Turn the autoresponder off, then check for a loop.
  • The option is missing. Your plan may not include it. Ask support.
