Email client settings
This guide covers where to find the correct server settings for a hosting email account, what IMAP and SMTP do, and how to set up a mail app with encryption turned on.
Before you begin
- A hosting email account and its password. See Create and manage mailboxes.
- The server settings shown in your hosting account. Do not take settings from another guide or another product.
Hosting settings are not Business Email settings
The server names and ports for hosting email are shown in your hosting account. Business Email uses different settings at mail.apncloud.com. Use the settings from the product your mailbox belongs to.
Steps
- Find the settings. Open the Email Accounts section, find the mailbox, and look for the mail client or connection details. Copy the server names and ports exactly as shown.
- Know what each protocol does. IMAP keeps your mail on the server, so it appears on every device. SMTP sends the mail you write. Most apps need both.
- Turn on encryption. Choose SSL/TLS or STARTTLS, as the panel shows. Never choose a setting with no encryption.
- Enter your full email address as the username, unless the panel shows a different username.
- Test the account. Send a message to an address you control and check that it arrives.
Expected result
The mail app shows your inbox, and a test message sends and arrives.
If something goes wrong
- The app asks you to accept a certificate you do not recognise. Stop. Check the server name against your hosting account. Do not accept a certificate for an unknown server.
- Sign-in fails. Check the password and the username. Read Hosting email troubleshooting for the general sign-in checks, and use the settings from your hosting account.
- Sending fails but receiving works. Check the outgoing server and port that the panel shows, and try the other secure option it lists.
