Choosing and ordering a VPS

This guide explains how to choose between VPS and shared hosting, decide between managed and unmanaged, and order a VPS in the Client Area.

Before you begin

  • A Client Area account. See Create an account and log in.
  • A clear idea of what the server must run, such as a website, an application or a database, and how much traffic you expect.
  • Your ability to manage a Linux server, or a plan to get help with it.

Steps

  1. Decide whether you need a VPS. Shared hosting is easier for a normal website. A VPS suits people who need root access, custom software or their own server environment.
  2. Choose managed or unmanaged. A managed VPS includes more day-to-day server work from APNCloud. An unmanaged VPS puts that work on you. Read the plan details for what each includes.
  3. Check the resources in the plan, such as CPU, memory, disk space and bandwidth. Choose a plan that fits what you will run, and check the limits shown.
  4. Check the operating system options, if the order page lists them.
  5. Order the VPS in the Client Area, complete the payment, and keep the order number.
  6. Wait for activation. When the VPS is ready, read Access details and SSH to find how to connect.

Prices and resource limits change. Check the Client Area and the APNCloud website before you order.

Expected result

Your VPS appears in the services list as active, with the access details shown in the account.

If something goes wrong

  • You are not sure which plan fits. Contact support before you order, and describe the software and traffic you expect.
  • The VPS is not active. Check the invoice first, then read Order status and activation.
  • A feature you need is missing. Not every plan has every feature, such as a console, reinstall or snapshots. Check the plan before you rely on it.
