SSL warnings and errors

Symptoms

  • The browser shows a warning, such as a certificate that is not trusted, not valid for this name, or expired.
  • The site shows a padlock on some pages but a warning on others.
  • The browser says the connection is not secure, even though HTTPS is on.

Common causes

  • The certificate has expired.
  • The certificate does not cover the name in the address bar, such as www missing from the certificate.
  • The intermediate chain is missing, so the browser cannot trust the certificate.
  • The page loads images, scripts or links over plain HTTP. This is called mixed content.
  • An old copy of the certificate is still installed, or a different site answers on the port.

Safe initial checks

  1. Check the expiry date of the certificate in your SSL order or the panel.
  2. Check the names on the certificate against the address bar, including www.
  3. Open the site in a private browser window to rule out cached warnings.
  4. Check the address you typed. It should start with https:// and match the certificate name.

These checks only read information. They do not change the site.

Step-by-step solutions

  1. Expired certificate. Renew it and install the new certificate. See Certificate lifecycle.
  2. Wrong names. Reissue the certificate with the missing names, or install a certificate that covers them. See Choosing and buying an SSL certificate.
  3. Missing chain. Install the intermediate chain from your order with the certificate. See Install an SSL certificate on APNCloud Hosting Panel.
  4. Mixed content. Change every http:// link, image and script address on the site to https://. Then test each page.
  5. Old certificate still served. Check which certificate is installed for the domain, and replace it.

How to confirm the issue is fixed

  • The padlock shows on the home page and on several inner pages, in a private window.
  • The certificate details show the correct domain names and a future expiry date.
  • The browser console shows no mixed content warnings.

When to contact support

Contact support if you cannot tell which certificate is installed, if the chain is not in your order, or if the warning continues after the steps above.

Information to include in a support ticket

  • The domain name and the page address that shows the warning.
  • The exact browser message and the time you saw it.
  • The order number, and whether the certificate is free or purchased.
